LOHP and The changing economy

Over the past several years, LOHP has expanded its work to include the international community.

In partnership with the Maquiladora Health and Safety Network (MHSSN), LOHP provides information, technical assistance and on-site instruction on workplace health and safety hazards to labor and non-governmental organizations from numerous countries to help build capacity of workers and their unions to address health and safety issues.

Examples of lohp and mhssn's international projects

  • ASIA: Since 2008, LOHP and MHSSN have conducted health and safety skills-building workshops each year at the annual conference of the Asian Network for the Rights of Occupational Accident Victims (ANROAV). 

  • MEXICO: LOHP and MHSSN have conducted over twenty multi-day trainings since 1993 with community, women's, environmental, and labor rights groups on the US-Mexico border.

  • CENTRAL AMERICA: In 2003/2004 and 2010, LOHP and MHSSN conducted trainings with unions, women's and human rights organizatins from five Central American countries and the Dominican Republic.

  • CHINA: From 2000-2002, LOHP helped design and implement the China Capacity Building Project on Occupational Safety and Health. Along with the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at UC Berkeley and local partners in Asia, LOHP and MHSSN brought together international footwear manufacturers, labor rights groups, local contr act factories, and occupational health professionals.

  • INDONESIA: In 2000 and 2002, LOHP and MHSSN conducted four-day trainings coordinated locally by LIPS, an Indonesian workers' rights group.
