Construction Safety

Under a grant from federal OSHA to the State Building and Construction Trades Council of California (AFL-CIO), LOHP has been working with the Council to create and present a "train the trainer" course on construction safety in English and Spanish. We have also produced a curriculum on construction safety in both languages, available both in print and online.

OSHA Grant

In the fall of 2000, the State Building and Construction Trades Council of California, AFL-CIO (SBCTC) received a Susan Harwood Training Grant from federal OSHA to create a "train the trainer" course on construction safety and translate it into Spanish. The course focuses on the prevention of ergonomic injuries and construction fatalities. SBCTC and LOHP staff have been training labor and management representatives and apprenticeship instructors, who then conduct classes for workers.

Tailgate Training Curriculum

LOHP has produced a curriculum on construction safety, Tailgate Training for California Construction Workers, which is available in both English and Spanish.

The book can help construction foremen and other trainers conduct effective safety training sessions on the job. It includes detailed Training Guides on 14 construction safety topics. There are also 14 matching Checklists on related Cal/OSHA regulations. For some topics, Case Studies (based on actual injuries and accidents) and Factsheets are also provided.

Both the English and Spanish editions of Tailgate Training for California Construction Workers are available for sale through our catalog. See the full description in the LOHP Publications section. The Training Guides, Checklists, and Case Studies can also be read online in either language. Click to view in English or Spanish.

Earlier Work in Construction

In 1994, LOHP worked with labor and management groups to develop our original 320-page construction safety curriculum, Tailgate Meetings That Work! The book was produced and pilot tested through a collaborative project involving LOHP, the State Building and Construction Trades Council of California, AFL-CIO, and Associated General Contractors of California.
