These state programs promote healthy workplaces through education, public service, and research. The Hazard Evaluation System and Information Service (HESIS) is a public outreach program that reviews scientific literature, issues free publications, answers questions by phone, and maintains a library. The Occupational Health Surveillance and Evaluation Program (OHSEP) conducts research.

Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (Labor Commissioner)

Enforces state wage and hour regulations. Also investigates some types of discrimination, including reprisal against workers for exercising health and safety rights. Site has information on complaint procedures.

A federal research and training agency, part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Site offers information on NIOSH publications, classes, and health hazard evaluation program. Also has research highlights, grant information, and NIOSH-recommended exposure limits for toxic substances. Download NIOSH materials such as the Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards. Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA)

Center to Protect Workers' Rights—Electronic Library of Construction Safety and Health (eLCOSH)

CPWR (see above) has gathered this extensive library of material on construction safety and health. Workers, contractors, researchers, and others can download information from many sources in English, Spanish, and other languages. Funding for eLCOSH is provided by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Committees on Occupational Safety and Health (COSH)

Labor History, Photos, and Art

California Labor History Map

Online map enables users to explore over 1200 events in the state's labor history. Searchable by date, location, and text. A printed copy of the map is on exhibit at the State Capitol in Sacramento. Copies are also available for sale. Prepared by the California Federation of Teachers, San Francisco State University, and others.

Child Labor Photos by Lewis Hine

The George Eastman House in Rochester, New York is sponsoring a travelling exhibit of photos by noted documentary photographer Lewis Hine. The collection, Let Children Be Children, features 54 of Hine's historical black and white images of child labor in the U.S.  The exhibit was in San Francisco in 2003 and in Los Angeles in the spring of 2004.

The photos from Let Children Be Children can be viewed on the George Eastman House website. The site also has several other Hine collections, including photos of Ellis Island and the construction of the Empire State Building.

Dorothea Lange Photo Collection

The Oakland Museum of California has an extensive collection of the work of documentary photographer Dorothea Lange. Photo archives and a slide show are online. Named for a well-known public health investigation in London in 1854, where John Snow correctly traced the source of a cholera epidemic to water from a local pump, despite being criticized by the scientific establishment of the time.

A "worker's manual for organising on work security" from the International Labor Organization (ILO). This is a practical guide that is available online in several languages, including a Chinese version provided by the Hong Kong Workers' Health Centre. It helps workers increase their control over their own work situations by researching hazards themselves. The United Association for Labor Education (UALE) represents several hundred labor educators and labor education programs throughout the U.S. and in some other countries.
