Workers' Compensation Carve-Outs Booklet for Unions and Employers, 2006

California workers' compensation law allows labor unions and employers to "carve out" alternative systems for delivering benefits to injured workers and resolving problems and disputes. LOHP's booklet, How To Create a Workers' Compensation Carve-Out in California: Practical Advice for Unions and Employers discusses important issues to consider in designing a carve-out and ensuring its success. New! Small Business Safety Training Materials

LOHP has been working in cooperation with small businesses in California to develop a safety training program that supervisors, managers, and owners can use to train employees.

Small businesses face unique health and safety issues. For example, worker injuries and illnesses result in lost workdays and lost productivity, which are particularly costly for small businesses. One of the best ways to prevent these injuries and illnesses is ongoing health and safety training for employees.

The packet of materials we created includes a training guide to engage workers in identifying and controlling hazards in their own workplace, a Safety Orientation Checklist to encourage workers to be aware of hazards, and Tip Sheets on topics of special concern to small businesses. There are also factsheets directed primarily at owners and employers, including an overview of Cal/OSHA and an explanation of how small businesses can benefit from improved safety programs.

All materials are currently available in English. Spanish versions will be available later in 2008. The training program and materials will also be adapted to several specific targeted industries. A version tailored for restaurants is already available (see section below).

The California Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation has supplied funding for this program. All materials in the small business packet may be viewed or downloaded in PDF form below.

Restaurant Safety Training Materials

In conjunction with our small business safety training project (see section above), LOHP has been working to adapt our small business materials for restaurant managers, supervisors, and owners. The packet of materials we created includes the Restaurant Safety Training Guide as well as factsheets, "tipsheets," and other resources.

The California Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation has supplied funding for the program. The restaurant training materials are available to read or download in English and Spanish at the Commission's website. Click below.
