Construction
Safety. Under a grant from federal OSHA to the State
Building and Construction Trades Council of California,
AFL-CIO, LOHP has been working with the
Council to create and present a "train
the trainer" course
on construction safety in English and Spanish. We
have also produced a curriculum on construction safety in
both languages, available both in print and online. Click
here for more information, or
contact Elaine El-Askari: easkari@berkeley.edu.
Environmental
Justice. LOHP works with environmental justice groups
that assist communities disproportionately affected by environmental
problems. We help organizations and activists develop training
and other programs that link the workplace and community. Click
here for more information, or contact Pam Tau Lee: ptlee@berkeley.edu.
Ergonomics.
LOHP provides training and technical assistance on ergonomics to
workers, joint labor-management groups, and others. Click
here for more information, or contact Laura Stock: lstock@berkeley.edu.
Hazardous
Waste. This LOHP project offers 8-hour and
24-hour classes for hazardous waste workers. Short introductory
Hazard Awareness classes are also available. Classes meet
OSHA and Cal/OSHA training requirements and are given in
both English and Spanish. Click
here for more information and a course schedule, or
contact Paul Mathes: pmathes@
berkeley.edu.
Human
Factors. LOHP has created a human
factors training program for refinery workers.
The curriculum, which is available through our catalog,
looks at the interface between humans and the workplace
and its implications for worker safety and health. We also
offer "training
of trainer" classes on human factors for unions, employers,
labor-management groups, and others. Click
here for more information, or contact Pam Tau Lee: ptlee@berkeley.edu.
Immigrant
Workers. LOHP helped launch the Working Immigrant
Safety and Health Coalition (WISH), which works to
improve the health and safety of California's immigrant
workers. Immigrants often face the most dangerous
work but have few resources to protect themselves. Click
here for more information, or contact Suzanne Teran: steran@berkeley.edu.
Lead
Hazards. LOHP has issued materials to help
school maintenance departments understand and work safely
around lead. Lead-safe work practices protect both workers
and school children. New
materials will be available soon for workers seeking certification
to do lead work in residential and public buildings in California.

Spanish-Language
Resources and Training. Many of LOHP's training programs
on hazardous waste, construction safety,
ergonomics,
and other health and safety topics are available in Spanish. We
also have Spanish-language
publications for sale, and some free online Spanish
factsheets. Contact Suzanne Teran: steran@berkeley.edu.
Tobacco
Education (BUILT Project). LOHP assists the State Building
and Construction Trades Council of California (SBCTC) in developing
materials and training programs that teach construction
workers about the combined hazards of tobacco and other toxic
substances on the job. The BUILT Project (Building Trades
Unions Ignite Less Tobacco), funded by California's Tobacco
Tax Initiative, sponsors training programs throughout the state.
An Instructor's Manual, Workers'
Guide,
and video
are available.

Union
Health and Safety Skills. Labor and community organizations
can integrate safety into every aspect of their work. LOHP
offers a variety of resources that can help. Our new
book, Tools
of the Trade, shows how unions
and community groups can advocate for workplace health and
safety while building their organizations at the same time.
Our handbook on Collective
Bargaining for Health and Safety features an extensive
collection of sample contract clauses that unions around
the U.S. have negotiated. LOHP also can provide training
on specific topics on request, and we have worked
with several unions and community-based organizations to
conduct joint research projects. Click

Worker
Occupational Safety and Health Training and Education Program
(WOSHTEP). This
exciting statewide initiative aims to reduce occupational injuries
and illnesses and workers' compensation costs in California workplaces.
The program was created in 2002 as
part of state workers' compensation reform. LOHP helps implement the
Northern California activities of the program. WOSHTEP sponsors
several activities targeting employers, workers, and the workers'
compensation community, with a common goal of promoting positive,
healthy employment. Projects include WOSH Specialist training
for workers, small business resources, young worker health and
safety projects, an electronic multilingual resource guide, and
Resource Centers in both Northern and Southern California. Click
here for more information on the program, or click
here for program staff
contact information.
Workers'
Compensation. LOHP has produced a guidebook,
factsheets, and a video that explain the California workers'
compensation
system
in clear, understandable language. We also present training for
unions on how to help injured members. Our staff
conduct applied
research on workers' compensation, and analyze legal and regulatory
issues for state policymakers. Click
here for more information, or
contact Juliann Sum: jsum@berkeley.edu.
Workplace
Violence. LOHP works with a multi-union Northern
California task force on workplace violence prevention.
With the task force, we presented a conference for union
representatives on "Mediating
Workplace Conflict" in February, 2004.
In past years, we jointly produced a guidebook
for unions on workplace violence, which is still available,
and held a conference on domestic violence. Click
here for more information, or contact Elaine El-Askari: easkari@berkeley.edu.
Young
Workers. The California Resource Network for Young
Worker Health and Safety, housed at LOHP, helps educate
and protect young people who work. The Resource Network
serves teens, parents, educators, employers, and others.
We have a website, curricula, factsheets, and a video that
teach teens about workplace safety and child labor laws. Click
here for more information, or contact Donna Iverson: driver@berkeley.edu.
