Every
six minutes a U.S. teenager is injured seriously enough on
the job to go to a hospital emergency room. 70 teens die from
their injuries each year.
The
California Resource Network for Young Worker Health and Safety,
housed at LOHP, helps educate and protect teens who work. Some
of our recent activities are described on this page.
2008
Poster Contest and Video Contest Winners
Each
May is Safe Jobs for Youth Month in California. To build interest,
LOHP and the Resource Network sponsor an annual safety poster
contest for teen artists as well as a Public Service Announcement
(PSA) video contest for teens.
The
winning poster for 2008, shown here, is by Yesica Villanueva of Courtland, California.
It will be distributed throughout the state as the official
poster of Safe Jobs for Youth Month 2008, and won a first prize
of $400.

For
more information, visit the Young Workers website at www.youngworkers.org.
The site also has a gallery of winning posters from 2008 and
previous years, winning videos from the PSA contest, and a kit of materials for use in schools and libraries during
Safe Jobs for Youth Month.
Youth
Academies
Again in 2008,
several dozen enthusiastic California teens attended a Young
Worker Leadership Academy (YWLA) on workplace health and safety.
Academies were held in Berkeley from January 24-26, 2008 and in Los Angeles from February 21-23, 2008. Each YWLA is a fun, activity-packed, all-expense-paid, 3-day
leadership training for teens. Academies provide both health and safety education
and a forum to plan service learning projects. Teams of young
people at each Academy work to create outreach activities.for
their schools and communities to promote positive, safe youth
employment.
The Academies
have been held since 2005 in various California locations. They are sponsored by the California Partnership for Young Worker
Health and Safety and are funded by the California Commission
on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation
as part of the Worker Occupational Safety and Health Training
and Education Program (WOSHTEP). Additional funding is received
from the California
Wellness Foundation.

Young
Workers Website
The
Resource Network's
website (www.youngworkers.org) has
valuable information for working teens, parents, educators,
employers, and others. It covers safety hazards in many typical
teen jobs, from fast food to agriculture, and explains California
wage, hour, and child labor regulations. The site also features
a gallery of entries in the poster contest and more information
on the public service announcement (PSA) contest.
Young
Worker Hotline
LOHP
also staffs the Resource Network's telephone hotline on young worker
health and safety. Assistance is available in both English and Spanish.
Call 1-888-933-TEEN (1-888-933-8336) with questions about
teen employment rights, labor laws, and job hazards.

Young
Worker Report
The California
Partnership for Young Worker Health and Safety, with which LOHP
and the Network are affiliated, has released a set of recommendations, "Keeping
California's Youth Safe on the Job." This statewide task force
includes representatives from 25 different agencies and organizations
that play a role in educating or protecting working teens. Recommendations
were developed and revised based on input from Partnership members,
as well from participants in a day-long public forum held in
March 2004, "Young
Workers at Risk: Planning for Action." The 33 recommendations
highlight policy changes, educational strategies, and enforcement
efforts that would improve the protection of young workers in
California. Click
here to download a copy of the recommendations.
