Young Worker Health and Safety Projects
A focus of WOSHTEP is on the importance of educating young workers about occupational safety and health and their rights and responsibilities on the job. WOSHTEP has several related projects with the goal of preparing youth to identify health and safety hazards in the workplace and to take an active role in health and safety at work.
Youth can also play a unique role in educating their peers and others in their communities. To help youth in this role, WOSHTEP has established the Young Worker Leadership Academy program. The goal of this Leadership Academy program is to effectively engage young workers as health and safety leaders at work and in their communities. Two or more Academies are held each year, involving teams of youth from throughout the state.
The objectives of each Academy are to teach youth
about workplace health and safety and their rights on the job,
and to provide a forum for these youth to plan for specific actions
they can take in their own communities to promote young worker
safety. Specific actions Academy teams have taken include conducting
health and safety activities in their schools and community centers,
designing informational brochures and videos, and holding a school
poster contest. These actions help highlight California's Safe
Jobs for Youth Month in May, an activity of the California Partnership
for Young Worker Health and Safety.
