Small Business Resources

Small businesses face unique health and safety issues in the workplace. Work injuries and illnesses result in days away from work and lost productivity, which are particularly costly for small businesses. One of the best strategies to prevent job injuries and illnesses is regular health and safety training for employees.

man slipping in kitchenWOSHTEP is developing easy-to-use training materials for small businesses that may not have a large enough staff to allow participation in the 24-hour WOSH Specialist training.

Restaurant Safety Training Materials

One small business training program is currently available for owners and managers of small restaurants in California. The materials include: a training guide to engage workers in identifying and controlling health and safety hazards in their own restaurant; a Safety Orientation Checklist to prepare new workers to be aware of hazards; and Tip Sheets on preventing burns and cuts, preventing slips and falls, preventing injuries from ergonomic hazards and from robberies and assaults, planning for emergencies on the job, and dealing with injuries on the job.

All of the materials are available in English and Spanish. This training will be adapted for owners and managers in other targeted industries in California in the future.

The California Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation has supplied funding for the program. The restaurant training materials are available to read or download in English and Spanish at the Commission's website. Click below.

New! More Small Business Safety Training Materials

WOSHTEP has also created a packet of materials that can be used for safety training in any California small business. It includes a training guide to engage workers in identifying and controlling hazards in their own workplace, a Safety Orientation Checklist to encourage workers to be aware of hazards, and Tip Sheets on topics of special concern to small businesses. There are also factsheets directed primarily at owners and employers, including an overview of Cal/OSHA and an explanation of how small businesses can benefit from improved safety programs.

All materials are currently available in English. Spanish versions will be available later in 2008. All materials in the small business packet may be viewed or downloaded in PDF form below.
